What To Expect During A Kitchen Make-over

Redoing your kitchen is a huge project that has a lot of details to consider, decide on, and oversee as they are implemented. If you have never renovated before or taken on a big house project, it can be overwhelming. You may be wondering how much it will cost or how long it will take? You may feel like it is too much if you are unprepared, but here are some of the things to expect and prepare for as you remodel your kitchen.

1. There will be a lot of dust

Even with zip walls, a fine layer of dust will still form in areas away from the construction site. Some projects like wall demolitions, removing tiles, or taking apart cabinets can produce fine dust particles that could be harmful when inhaled. Remove everything from the kitchen area before the work begins. If you can’t remove it, cover it with plastic to prevent dust from accumulating in the cracks and crevices. Isolate the kitchen area as much as possible with plastic or a compression wall. Use air handlers to filter the air in the rest of the house and skip using the furnace or AC. If you must use them, completely block the warm-air and cold-air ducts in the kitchen to prevent pulling in the dust.

2. There will be highs and sighs

Whether it’s demolishing a wall to make the kitchen bigger or removing the ugly vinyl flooring, allow yourself to get excited about each step of the project. The noise, questions and all the people coming and going from your house can wear you out. Remodeling fatigue can affect you and your whole family. But by thinking of how beautiful your kitchen will be with those new , it will keep you motivated through the remodel.

3. It will be noisy

Construction equipment can be very noisy, from the saws, scratching sanders to thumping nail guns. If you have kids, keep them in the furthest room away from the construction. You might have to move your office space if you if it is close to the kitchen.

4. Be budget conscious

As a rule of thumb, your should be about 15 percent of your home’s current market price. However, you should expect additional costs not included in your budget. Labor and installation are going to be your main costs, but don’t forget to cater for miscellaneous expenses.

5. Expect to have delays

Being prepared for unforeseen delays can help you cope with any frustrations you may encounter as you remodel. Some delays are outside the contractor’s control, such as running out of materials on backorder, weather delays, changes in laborers, or even fixing faulty construction. All these things can increase the project’s timeline. Having a good working relationship with your contractor will help.

Once you know what to expect and have prepared for it, your kitchen remodel experience will be less overwhelming and stressful. It can even turn out to be a fun and exciting experience.
